  20. <p>     In the making of books, one plus one occasionally add up
  21. to less than two. Consider this highly touted first
  22. collaboration of best-selling authors--husband and wife when
  23. not at work--who have an array of awards to their credit.
  24. Curiously, the talent pooling has spawned a novel with as much
  25. spontaneity as if it had been plotted by computer.
  26. </p>
  27. <p>     Vivian Twostar--part Navajo, wholly feminist--is an
  28. assistant professor of anthropology, desperately seeking tenure.
  29. As the story laboriously unfolds, Vivian gives birth to a
  30. daughter by her once and future lover Roger Williams, poet and
  31. English prof. She is a sensual, lapsed Catholic Earth Mother.
  32. Roger is Mr. Stuffy: a New England Episcopalian with neat-freak
  33. closets and a kitchen full of name-brand gizmos.
  34. </p>
  35. <p>     Now guess where these two polar-opposite paragons teach.
  36. You got it: Dartveddy Ivy League but founded as a prep school
  37. for New Hampshire Indian lads. Their common link, besides
  38. furtive lust, is Christopher Columbus. She has been asked for
  39. an article on the quin centennial of his first voyage from her
  40. people's perspective. He is laptopping an epic poem on the great
  41. explorer. In pursuit of Columbus' lost diary, Roger and Vivian
  42. fly to Eleuthera in the Bahamas as guests of a junk-bond
  43. financier on the lam. This quasi Milken thinks Vivian knows the
  44. secret burial site of a golden crown that Queen Isabella gave
  45. Columbus. But what if it was a crown of a different kind?
  46. </p>
  47. <p>     Wild church mice could not drag further clues from this
  48. reviewer. Those who care about the answer may want to wait for
  49. the movie, which should be at your local plex not long after the
  50. paperback edition hits the discount shelves.
